June is Great Outdoors Month, a wonderful opportunity to encourage children to step outside, explore nature and discover the small wonders that are often hiding in plain sight.
As the author of a picture book about a kind spider, I've always been fascinated by the tiny creatures that share our gardens, parks and woodlands. Children are naturally curious about mini-beasts, and a simple walk outdoors can become an exciting adventure filled with discovery, storytelling and learning.
Whether you're a parent, carer, grandparent, teacher or another supportive adult, here are some simple ways to celebrate Great Outdoors Month with your children.
🕸️ Go Spider Web Spotting
One of nature's most beautiful creations can often be found right outside our doors.
Early in the morning, look for spider webs sparkling with dew. Talk about the care and patience a spider needs to build its web and how every creature has an important role in nature.
Try asking:
How many webs can you find?
What shapes can you see?
Where do you think the spider is now?
🐞 Become a Mini-Beast Explorer
Children love searching for tiny creatures.
Take a notebook and see how many mini-beasts you can find:
Ladybirds 🐞
Ants 🐜
Butterflies 🦋
Beetles 🪲
Spiders 🕷️
Encourage children to draw what they find or invent a story about their adventures.
🌼 Create a Nature Treasure Hunt
Can you find:
A yellow flower 🌼
A smooth stone 🪨
A feather 🪶
Something rough 🌳
Something soft 🍃
Treasure hunts encourage observation skills and help children connect with the natural world.
🎨 Make Nature Art
Collect fallen leaves, sticks, petals and pinecones to create pictures inspired by nature.
You might make:
A spider web 🕸️
A butterfly 🦋
A woodland scene 🌳
A sunshine picture ☀️
Remember to leave living plants and creatures undisturbed.
📚 Take Story Time Outdoors
Books and nature make a wonderful combination.
Choose a favourite story and read:
In the garden
At a local park
During a picnic
Under a shady tree
Outdoor reading can help stories come alive in new ways.
🧺 Enjoy a Mindful Picnic
While eating together outdoors, encourage children to notice:
Three things they can hear 👂
Three things they can see 👀
One thing they can smell 👃
Simple activities like this help children slow down and appreciate their surroundings.
🕷️ Build a Mini-Beast Home
Using sticks, leaves and natural materials, create a pretend home for a spider or another small creature.
Ask questions such as:
How would it stay safe?
What would it need?
Who might visit?
This activity combines creativity, storytelling and empathy.
🌻 Grow Something for Wildlife
Planting flowers in a garden, window box or pot can help attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Watching plants grow teaches patience, responsibility and an appreciation for nature.
💚 A Kindness Challenge Inspired by a Kind Spider
Throughout June, encourage children to complete one small act of kindness each day.
Ideas include:
Helping at home
Sharing toys
Saying thank you
Reading with someone
Caring for wildlife and nature
Kindness, like a spider's web, can spread further than we realise.
🌿 Celebrating Great Outdoors Month Together
Great Outdoors Month isn't about grand adventures or expensive days out. Sometimes the most memorable moments come from noticing a spider's web, watching a butterfly land on a flower, or sharing a story beneath a tree.
This June, I hope you'll find time to explore, wonder and make happy outdoor memories together. Why not make a family book with photos, children's artwork and comments? 📖
What's your child's favourite outdoor activity? I'd love to hear about your adventures in the comments! 🕷️💚
